Older women eat soy bones!

It is believed that soy isoflavones can inhibit bone absorption and stimulate bone formation. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that soy isoflavones can help maintain bone mineral density.

The study included 24,000 postmenopausal women who had no history of fractures or hormone therapy. They were asked about their diets in the form of a questionnaire and followed up for the incidence of fractures four and a half years later. The results showed that 1770 cases of fractures occurred in these patients, and the incidence of fractures was significantly reduced in those who consumed more soy protein. Even if the calorie intake, economic status, other nutrition, and osteoporosis risk factors were adjusted, the results did not change.

The most obvious result is women within 10 years of menopause. Eating soy may partly help reduce menopause-related bone calcium loss, but the reversal effect is less pronounced in women who already have lost bone calcium.
