Researchers at a foundation affiliated with the state government of Minas Gerais, Brazil, found that rattlesnake toxins temporarily paralyze muscles and partially relax them. This can be used to treat muscle abnormalities, such as helping the muscles responsible for controlling eye movements to restore balance.
One of the important reasons for strabismus is the balance and synchronization of the muscles responsible for controlling eye movements. The current common treatment is to inject botulinum toxin to relax and restore the relevant muscles. Because rattlesnake toxin has a similar effect to botulinum toxin, the researchers believe it can also be used to treat strabismus, especially for strabismus patients who have developed antibodies to botulinum toxin. In addition, since the effect of the rattlesnake toxin is more durable than botulinum toxin, treatment with it can also reduce the number of times a patient receives an injection.
Currently, researchers are seeking to work with relevant institutions for clinical testing. Their goal is to provide this treatment to the strabismus patient population free of charge through the Brazilian universal health system in the future.
