There is a growing body of research exploring the health effects of wine, with findings that are both positive and negative. A recent study conducted by Zui in the United States suggests that moderate consumption of beer or wine may benefit bone strength.
In a new report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers from Tufts University in Boston shared their findings after studying 1,182 men and over 1,500 women aged between 29 and 86 years. The study aimed to understand how alcohol consumption affects bone density.
Through detailed analysis of participants' drinking habits and bone mineral density, the researchers observed some interesting trends. Among men, those who consumed one or two glasses of wine or beer daily showed higher bone density compared to non-drinkers. However, individuals who drank more than two servings per day had lower bone density than those who didn’t drink at all. In women, the results were slightly different—those who drank two glasses of wine daily had greater bone mineral density than those who drank less, but the effect of beer on women’s bones was not as clear.
Bone mineral density is a key indicator of bone strength and overall skeletal health. The researchers believe that beer contains high levels of silicon, which may support bone health, while the polyphenols in wine could also offer protective benefits. However, they still haven’t fully explained why beer appears to affect men and women differently when it comes to bone density. This study adds to the ongoing conversation about the complex relationship between alcohol and health.
