The Singapore Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology is working on a groundbreaking portable dialysis device made from thin film technology. This innovative system is designed to closely replicate the natural function of human kidneys, effectively removing toxins from the blood while preserving essential nutrients that the body needs.
As reported by Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao," the device uses a polysulfone-based film that mimics the kidney's filtration process. It can separate red blood cells from larger proteins and even support the growth of renal epithelial cells, which could significantly improve the efficiency and safety of dialysis treatments.
This advancement could potentially eliminate the need for traditional dialysate during treatment, making the process more convenient and less painful for patients. However, the project is still in its early stages, and it may take around five years before the device becomes available for widespread use. Researchers are optimistic about its future potential and the positive impact it could have on kidney disease patients worldwide. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
