Vinca, also known as the "Spring of the Day," is a flowering plant that blooms daily throughout the year. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is an evergreen, upright subshrub. The plant typically grows to a height of 30–60 cm, with opposite, long-oval leaves that are dark green in color, often with a lighter underside. Its flowers are axillary, with a salverform corolla and five lobes arranged in a ring. The flowers measure 3–4 cm in diameter and come in colors such as white, pink, or purplish red.
One unique feature of Vinca is that at the tip of each tender shoot, two flowers emerge between every pair of leaves. This characteristic gives it a distinctive blooming pattern, with a very long flowering season and abundant, vibrant flowers. The plant flowers continuously from spring through autumn, which has earned it the nickname "Sun, Spring, and Ever-Blooming."
Native to the West Indies, Vinca was introduced to China as early as the Song Dynasty. It thrives in warm, humid environments and can tolerate partial shade. It is commonly propagated by sowing seeds.
Beyond its ornamental value, Vinca is also highly valued for its medicinal properties. It contains over 55 types of alkaloids, including vinblastine and vincristine, which have shown significant effects in treating various malignant tumors such as choriocarcinoma, lymphosarcoma, and childhood acute leukemia. These compounds are among the most widely used anticancer agents globally, making Vinca not only a beautiful garden plant but also a powerful tool in modern medicine.
