Crayfish farming is becoming an increasingly popular and profitable practice, especially in reservoirs, rice fields, and ponds. This year, our province plans to promote crawfish farming in hilly areas, offering new opportunities for local farmers. As an expert in crayfish cultivation, Yang Zhihang is eager to share practical techniques and models that can be applied in this region.
He recommends three effective farming methods:
First, single-crop pond farming, which can yield between 1,000 to 3,000 catties per mu. It's important to plant aquatic vegetation to provide shade and improve water quality.
Second, integrated shrimp and rice farming, following the "1-7" model. This involves one field for building dikes, two for creating shrimp ponds, and seven for growing rice. This system can produce about 500 pounds of shrimp and over 1,000 pounds of rice per mu.
Third, a polyculture system where shrimp are the main species, with 20% of the area dedicated to white peony for water purification. This method can result in around 1,000 kilograms of shrimp and 400–500 kilograms of fish per mu.
These models not only maximize land use but also promote sustainable aquaculture practices. By adopting these methods, farmers can increase their income while maintaining environmental balance. If you're interested in starting crayfish farming, consider consulting local experts or attending training sessions to get started on the right foot.
