Vinca, commonly known as the "Day's Spring," is a flowering plant that blooms daily throughout the year. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, it is an evergreen, upright subshrub with a height ranging from 30 to 60 cm. The leaves are opposite, long and oval-shaped, with a deep green color and a slight lighter hue on the underside. The flowers grow in the leaf axils, featuring a salverform corolla with five lobes arranged in a circular pattern. They measure about 3 to 4 cm in diameter and come in colors such as white, pink, or purplish red.
One unique characteristic of Vinca is that, at the tip of each tender shoot, two flowers appear between every pair of leaves. This unusual growth pattern results in an exceptionally long blooming period and vibrant, abundant flowers. From spring through autumn, Vinca remains in full bloom without interruption, which has earned it the nickname "Sun, Spring, and Perpetual Bloom."
Native to the West Indies, Vinca was introduced to China as early as the Song Dynasty. It thrives in warm and humid conditions and can tolerate partial shade. It is commonly propagated through sowing.
Beyond its ornamental value, Vinca has significant medicinal importance. It contains over 55 types of alkaloids, including vinblastine and vincristine, which have proven effectiveness in treating various malignant tumors such as choriocarcinoma, lymphosarcoma, and childhood acute leukemia. These compounds are among the most widely used anticancer agents worldwide, making Vinca not only a beautiful garden plant but also a vital resource in modern medicine. Its combination of beauty, resilience, and health benefits makes it a truly remarkable species.
