Winter rabbit breeding is a critical factor in improving the overall productivity and health of the rabbit population. Proper management during this season can significantly enhance breeding success. Here's how to effectively manage rabbit breeding in winter. First, selecting high-quality breeding rabbits is essential. Male rabbits should be between 8 to 10 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg, while females should be 6 to 8 months old and weigh over 3 kg. Males need to have a strong build, good movement, normal appetite, thick limbs, shiny fur, and high fertility. Females must be healthy, calm, with clear reproductive organs, no dirt on their genital area, regular estrus cycles, at least four pairs of teats, and good milk production. Second, timing the mating process is crucial. Winter breeding requires careful observation of the estrus cycle, which typically lasts 7 to 17 days, with estrus lasting 1 to 3 days. The best time for mating is around noon on sunny days after the lunar calendar. This is when rabbits are more active and receptive. Additionally, breeding can also occur one hour before sunset, as this is another peak period for sexual activity. After mating, gently stimulate the female’s rear to help the semen reach the uterus, increasing conception rates. Using methods like "double mating" (using two different males in the morning and evening) or "repeated mating" can improve litter size. Third, maintaining proper temperature and insulation is vital. Rabbits prefer clean, dry, and well-ventilated environments with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. During winter, the rabbit house should be warm, located in a sheltered and sunny spot. Use straw curtains, soft bedding, and ensure the temperature doesn’t drop below 5°C. In warmer weather, allow rabbits to bask in sunlight. Avoid smoking inside the shed to prevent respiratory issues, and use lime or wood ash to control humidity. Fourth, feeding should be nutritionally balanced. Pregnant females require at least 30% green feed such as cabbage, carrots, and vegetables, along with supplements like wheat bran, soybean meal, fishmeal, and bone meal. Avoid feed spoilage, as it can lead to low conception rates and weak offspring. Always provide fresh water with each feeding and avoid contaminated or frozen food. Fifth, proper care for newborns is essential. After giving birth, feed the mother some brown sugar water and salt solution to prevent dehydration. Newborns should nurse frequently, and by 16 to 19 days old, they can begin weaning with small amounts of soy milk and rice soup. Gradually introduce wheat flour and bean dregs, then add mineral supplements and carrots. Feed them 4 to 5 times daily, including one night feeding, and always ensure access to clean water. Encourage exercise and sun exposure to boost their immunity. Lastly, disease prevention is key. In winter, rabbits are more prone to illness due to cold and poor ventilation. Regularly feed garlic, ginger, and yeast tablets to support immunity. If any rabbit shows signs of illness, isolate it immediately to prevent spreading.
