Winter start diesel engine "six kinds of magic" is not desirable

Low temperatures in winter can make starting a diesel engine quite challenging. Unfortunately, some people resort to unsafe and incorrect methods in an attempt to start the engine quickly. These improper practices can cause serious damage to the engine. To help prevent such issues, we’d like to share six important tips on how not to start a diesel engine in cold weather — and what you should do instead. First, avoid using an open flame to heat the fuel tank. This practice can damage the paint on the engine's body and may even ignite plastic fuel lines, leading to oil leaks. In extreme cases, the rapid expansion of gas inside the tank could result in an explosion, causing severe damage or even injury. Second, never use an open flame to bake the oil pan. Doing so can degrade the engine oil, reduce its lubricating properties, and shorten the engine’s lifespan. Third, don’t skip adding coolant when starting the engine. If you wait until after starting to add water, the sudden temperature change can cause cracks in the engine block or cylinder head. Fourth, avoid pouring oil directly into the intake manifold. This can lead to carbon buildup on the piston and piston rings, reducing the engine’s efficiency and service life. Fifth, never remove the air filter when starting the engine. Doing so allows unfiltered air to enter the engine, increasing wear on internal components like the cylinder and valves. Sixth, don’t try to force-start the engine without preheating. Using external power to start a cold engine can cause dry friction between the crankshaft and bearings, potentially leading to mechanical failure. So, how should you properly start a diesel engine in cold weather? First, use diesel fuel with a low freezing point, such as winter-grade diesel. Second, preheat the engine oil and fuel using hot water. Third, add about 70°C hot water to the cooling system before starting. Fourth, use charcoal or hot water to warm up the oil pan, injectors, high-pressure lines, and engine block before attempting to start. By following these proper procedures, you can protect your engine and ensure smooth operation even in the coldest conditions.
