Combine harvester maintenance

As the summer harvest comes to a close, it's time to prepare your combine harvester for storage and maintenance. Proper care after the season ensures that your equipment remains in top condition for the next year. Here are essential maintenance tips to follow: First, thoroughly clean the machine. Open all inspection covers and remove protective panels. Clear out any leftover debris from the roller chamber, transfer bridge, small jitter board, cleaning chamber floor, fan scroll, gearbox exterior, and the header. Also, remove straw, weeds, mud, and other residues from the frame, engine, and other parts. Once cleaned, start the machine and let the working components run at high speed for 3–5 minutes to clear any remaining material. Then rinse the outside with water and run the machine again at high speed for a few minutes to remove excess moisture. Next, lubricate the machine according to the manufacturer’s lubrication chart, lubrication table, and diesel engine manual. After applying the proper grease or oil, let the diesel engine idle at a low throttle for 5–10 minutes to ensure even distribution. For the knife maintenance, carefully remove and inspect the cutting blades. Check for dirt, loosened rivets, excessive wear, or bent tool rods. Tighten any loose fasteners and replace blades that have worn beyond the recommended limits. If the tool rod is deformed, straighten it before reinstalling. Ensure the blade gap is within 0.20 mm, and check that the power rod moves smoothly without sticking. Apply lubricant and protect against rust. Inspect the threshing rollers and replace any overweight or damaged threshing arches. Make sure the arches are properly aligned and free from lateral deformation. Check all fasteners for looseness and tighten them as needed. A loose bolt or nut can cause serious damage over time. Examine the drive chains. Remove them, clean thoroughly, and look for cracks or signs of wear. Replace any damaged chains immediately to avoid breakdowns during the next season. Service the drive belts by removing them and checking for slippage, aging, or damage. Replace any worn-out belts. For those still in good condition, clean them, dust with talcum powder, re-install them, and adjust tension as required before the next harvest season. Paint the exposed metal surfaces to prevent rust and extend the life of the machine. This step also improves the appearance and resale value. Finally, adjust all snail mechanisms to their correct positions. Apply grease to moving parts and lower the pull-out wheel and header to their lowest position. Raise the plunger rod into the cylinder to complete the maintenance process. Taking the time to properly maintain your combine harvester will save you money and headaches in the long run. With regular care, your machine will be ready for the next harvest season, running efficiently and reliably.
