Rabbit Reproduction in Winter Should Pay Attention to Five Points

In winter, the climate tends to be dry, and there are fewer infectious diseases, which makes it an ideal time for rabbit breeding. Rex rabbits typically have a good appetite during this season, but proper care and attention are still essential to ensure successful breeding. Here are some key points to consider: First, selecting high-quality breeding rabbits is crucial. The quality of the parents directly affects the health and growth of their offspring. For male rabbits, they should be between 7 to 8 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg. Female rabbits should be 6 to 7 months old and weigh over 3 kg. Males should appear strong, with a well-proportioned body, smooth back, and sturdy limbs, while females should be robust, calm, and have at least four pairs of functional teats. They should also be able to build nests, nurse their young, and avoid urinating in the nest. Second, maintaining proper insulation and temperature control is vital. Rex rabbits prefer a clean and dry environment, with an ideal temperature range of 10–25°C. During winter, the temperature should be kept as close to 10°C as possible, but not below 5°C. When using heating systems, it's important to prevent gas leaks or respiratory issues by ensuring good ventilation. Third, timely breeding is essential. Due to the cold, rabbits may become less active, and their estrus cycles can be harder to detect. The estrus cycle for Rex rabbits lasts 7–12 days, with the estrus period lasting 1–3 days. It’s best to breed on a sunny day around noon, or if the indoor temperature is stable, you can also breed in the morning or evening. Fourth, feeding and management require special attention. Winter is cold and long, with shorter daylight hours. A balanced diet is crucial to support both breeding and the growth of young rabbits. Green vegetables like radishes, cabbage, and carrots should make up at least 30% of the diet. Feed rich in vitamins and minerals, such as wheat bran, fish meal, and bone meal, should be provided to pregnant and nursing rabbits. If possible, use commercial pellets with a recommended formula: corn (15%), soybean cake (15%), wheat bran (20%), lotus root (8%), grass powder (35%), bone meal (2%), salt (0.5%), vitamin premix (0.5%), and shell powder (1%). Young rabbits have small stomachs, so feed them 4–5 times daily, including one feeding at night. Ensure fresh water is always available, and avoid feeding moldy, frozen, or soiled grass. After giving birth, female rabbits should be given brown sugar water or saline to help with recovery. Lastly, disease prevention and treatment are critical. Regular disinfection and vaccination are necessary to keep the rabbits healthy. Feeding garlic, onions, or other natural remedies can help boost immunity. If any signs of illness appear, isolate the affected rabbits immediately and consult a veterinarian for prompt treatment. By following these guidelines, rabbit breeders can maximize success and ensure the health and well-being of their animals throughout the winter season.
