Scientific Name: Rhodotyphlus scandens
Common Name: White Bitternut
Family: Rosaceae
Rhodotyphlus scandens is native to southeastern China, northern China, northwestern China, central China, eastern China, and also found in Japan. This plant thrives in full sun or partial shade and is tolerant of cold weather. However, it does not like heavy or compacted soil, preferring loose and nutrient-rich conditions. It is easy to prune and grows vigorously, reaching a height of about 2 meters. The older branches are purple-brown, while the young shoots start off green and turn light brown as they mature.
The leaves are opposite, ovate or ovate-elliptic in shape, with folded surfaces and concave veins. The leaf margins have prominent teeth. The flowers are white, appearing singly at the tips of the current year's branchlets. Each flower has four petals and measures 3–4 cm in diameter, blooming from April to May. The fruit is obovate, dark black in color, and ripens between July and August.
This species can be propagated through seeds, runners, or cuttings. Seeds have a dormancy period, so they can be sown in autumn or in the spring after stratification. Seedlings typically begin to flower in their third year. With its elegant and graceful foliage, Rhodotyphlus scandens is ideal for planting in lawns, along pathways, near ponds, or among rocks. It adds a natural and decorative touch to any garden setting.
