Potted Plants----Butterfly Sky Flower

Amaranthus Brahmae, commonly known as Acacia, is a perennial herb that thrives naturally on the hillside of Cangshan Mountain in Dali, Yunnan, at an elevation of 850 to 1600 meters above sea level. In its natural habitat, it typically grows to a height of 0.5 to 0.8 meters, while when cultivated in pots, it usually reaches about 0.4 meters with a crown diameter of approximately 0.5 meters. This striking plant blooms from July through November, producing vibrant red flowers with five petals, each measuring 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The male pollen is a bright golden yellow, located around the central stigma, which is dark red and secretes a sticky mucus. After flowering, the fruit develops short hairs, and the seeds mature roughly 15 days later. Each fruit contains between 10 and 20 black seeds, each featuring a small navel-like depression. Propagation is best done in spring or early April, either directly in the ground or in a greenhouse. A well-draining soil mix consisting of half humus and fine sand is ideal for seed germination. Seeds should be sown when the evening temperature reaches 15°C and the daytime (soil) temperature ranges between 25 to 35°C. Germination typically occurs within 10 to 15 days, resulting in the emergence of two cotyledons. However, if the temperature is too low, it may take 1 to 2 months for the seedlings to appear, and the quality of the seedlings tends to be poor. Therefore, maintaining optimal seedling temperatures is crucial for both the speed of emergence and the overall health of the plants. Once the seedlings have developed 4 to 6 true leaves, they can be transplanted from the seedbed into individual pots. For pot cultivation, it's recommended to place 3 plants per pot in a triangular arrangement, especially if the plant is smaller than 20 cm in diameter. When planting in the ground, maintain a spacing of 0.5 meters between plants and 0.25 meters between individual plants. Young plants have underdeveloped fibrous roots, so care must be taken during transplanting to avoid damaging them. Watering after planting helps ensure successful establishment. This plant is widely used in landscaping and flower beds due to its striking red blooms and high ornamental value. It is highly tolerant of heat, thriving in temperatures ranging from 35 to 39°C during the growing season. However, when temperatures drop below 7°C, bud development ceases, and flowering stops. If the temperature falls below 3°C, some leaves may wilt, and growth will come to a standstill. With proper care and suitable conditions, Amaranthus Brahmae offers a beautiful and resilient addition to any garden or landscape.
