Most tea gardens begin to sprout in early spring, typically around mid-March (excluding greenhouse-grown tea), with the first flush of new shoots appearing. During this period, several pests commonly affect the tea plants. These include the tea leafworm, tea aphids, tea-footworm, black tea tussock moth, tea caterpillar, snake eyelid, Changbai cricket, tea pheasant, black thorn whitefly, and tea orange pod. On the disease front, common issues are bud blight, white spot disease, and dark brown leaf spot.
In recent years, some of these pests have shown localized infestations, requiring targeted pesticide application. For example, tea leafworms, tea aphids, tea puffer horses, and black locust whiteflies are usually managed in mid to late May. Tea locusts, tea caterpillars, and tea black venom often appear in clusters, and for small infestations, manual removal or spraying can be effective. However, when the infestation is widespread and causes significant damage, chemical control becomes necessary.
For the control of tea leafworms, tea leafhoppers, tea black poison moths, and tea caterpillars, you can use 2.5% Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) at a rate of 20–25 ml per mu, 2.5% Uranus EC at 20 ml per mu, or 35% Sadan at 60–80 ml per mu. For pests such as tea pheasants, snake eyelid, Changbai crickets, tea puffer horses, and black thorn whiteflies, 10% Imidacloprid powder at 20 g per mu is recommended. For tea orange pod, 30–30 ml per mu of an appropriate formulation should be used.
It's important to note the safety intervals for each pesticide: 5 days for "Enemy Killed," 6 days for "Uranus," 7 days for "Sadan," and 7–10 days for imidacloprid. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations to ensure both plant health and environmental safety. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to maintaining healthy tea crops throughout the growing season.
