Nectarine cultivation offers four key advantages: quick results, high yield, superior quality, and ease of management. Unlike traditional tree forms that take 5-6 years to produce high yields, nectarine trees can reach full production within 2-3 years. The structured planting arrangement ensures even fruit distribution, good air circulation, and optimal light exposure, which contribute to higher yields. The fruits are visually appealing, with vibrant colors and a sweet taste, making them highly marketable. Additionally, the compact size of dwarf nectarine trees makes pruning, spraying, and overall field management much easier.
**First, site preparation and planting**
Choose well-drained soil with good fertility. For open-field cultivation, plant 333 trees per acre with a spacing of 2 meters between rows and 1 meter between plants. In greenhouses, plant 500 trees per acre with 1.8 meters between rows and 0.75 meters between plants. Dig trenches 80 cm wide and 50 cm deep in a north-south or east-west direction. Before planting, mix 5,000 kg of organic fertilizer, 100 kg of superphosphate, and 50 kg of potassium sulfate into the soil. Water thoroughly, then form raised beds 1 meter wide and 30 cm high. Soak seedlings in a 200-fold K84 solution for 2 hours to prevent diseases like peach root nodule virus before planting. After watering, place the seedlings in holes, fill with fine soil, and cover with plastic mulch.
**Second, management in the first year after planting**
After planting, cut the seedling 10 cm above the grafting point. When new shoots appear, select the main branch and remove others. When the main branch reaches 20 cm, tie it to a bamboo frame and allow one lateral branch every 20 cm. When the lateral branches grow to 30 cm, pinch their tips and spread them horizontally on both sides of the main branch. This creates a fishbone-like structure. From germination to early July, focus on fertilization and growth promotion. Apply nitrogen-based fertilizers, organic manure, and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers every 10 days. Spray gibberellic acid (1510-6) every 10-15 days, up to 2-3 times. In mid-July, stop fertilizing and tilt the trunk at a 45-degree angle. Fix it on the frame without bending the main branch. Apply 15% paclobutrazol or PBO spray 1-3 times to encourage early flowering. Prune back unnecessary branches and continue fertilizing in October with organic and phosphorus-rich materials.
**Third, management during the fruiting period**
Soil fertility is critical during flowering and fruit development. Top-dress each tree with 0.25-0.5 kg of diammonium or compound fertilizer and apply foliar sprays of 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate every 15 days. Artificial pollination should be done 1-2 days after flowering, ideally between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Thin fruits twice—once when buds appear and again two weeks after flowering—to ensure better fruit size and quality. After harvest, perform deep tilling and fertilize to replenish nutrients. Prune old fruiting branches to stimulate new growth and promote future yields. Continue using paclobutrazol to control vegetative growth and encourage flower bud formation.
**Fourth, pest and disease control**
Common pests and diseases include peach yellow leaf curl, bacterial spot, aphids, and borers. Maintain cleanliness by removing fallen leaves and weeds, and plow the soil deeply. Paint tree trunks white and spray 5 Baume lime sulfur before bud break. To manage peach yellow leaf curl, add 50 kg of ferrous sulfate per acre to organic fertilizer and spray 50% carbendazim + 25% diflubenzuron. Control bacterial spot and pests like borer and leaf miner with imidacloprid before and after flowering, and use diflubenzuron and thiophanate-methyl from June to July. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential for healthy, productive nectarine trees.
