Spring Swine Technology

In spring, the gradual warming of the weather makes it an ideal time for raising pigs. However, this season is also known for its unpredictable climate and the rapid multiplication of various pathogens. If proper disinfection and management are not maintained, diseases can easily occur. Therefore, disease prevention during spring is crucial for pig farming. Proper housing is essential for pigs, as they prefer dry and clean environments. In early March, when day and night temperatures fluctuate significantly, it's important to seal any gaps in the pigpen, close the doors, hang curtains, and keep the area warm. Maintaining a dry and clean environment is vital for the healthy growth of piglets. Sows should be kept in well-insulated areas. Before summer arrives, the pig house must be thoroughly disinfected to prevent bacterial growth. Cleaning can be done using lime milk at 20%–30%, wood ash at 20%, or a sodium hydroxide solution at 2%–3%. After cleaning, the area should be disinfected with a 3%–5% solution of disinfectant, then rinsed with water to avoid poisoning or affecting feed intake. Preventing infectious diseases such as swine fever, erysipelas, pleuropneumonia, foot-and-mouth disease, and blue ear disease is critical. Farmers should strictly follow vaccination schedules to ensure all pigs are properly immunized. Any missed doses or vaccine failures should be avoided. In case of an outbreak, strict quarantine measures must be enforced, additional vaccinations should be given, and dead animals should be disposed of according to regulations. If an outbreak occurs nearby, access to the farm should be restricted to authorized personnel only, and no outsiders or vehicles should be allowed in. Nutrition plays a key role in pig health. The feed formula should be adjusted based on the pig’s growth stage and nutritional needs. During spring, green feed is limited, so adding juicy feeds like carrots or molasses can help stimulate appetite and provide essential vitamins. Regular monitoring of weight gain and feed consumption will help maintain optimal nutrition. Spring weather changes can be challenging for pigs, and even small mistakes in feeding or management can lead to illness or even death. It's important to pay close attention to sow care, keeping their udders clean and hygienic. Proper feeding, hydration, and care during critical periods such as farrowing, nursing, and weaning are essential. Weaned pigs require special attention to prevent diseases like swine dysentery. Vaccinating sows during the second trimester of pregnancy, maintaining cleanliness, and improving pig immunity through proper diet and exercise are all effective strategies. In addition, incorporating traditional Chinese medicine into the feeding regimen can enhance disease resistance. A mixture containing herbs like Nepeta, windproof, forsythia, honeysuckle, large-leafed ephedra, apricot kernels, and licorice can be ground into a fine powder. Each pig should receive 10–20 grams per dose, administered twice daily every 10–20 days. This natural approach helps strengthen the immune system and supports overall pig health during the spring season.
