Phnom Penh, commonly known as Ruixiang, has a weak ability to reproduce sexually, which makes it difficult to obtain enough seedlings. As a result, the seedlings are scarce and expensive. To overcome this issue, vegetative propagation through water-cutting is an effective method. This technique allows for faster rooting and a higher survival rate, while also reducing the need for frequent watering. It is highly recommended for flower growers to adopt this method.
After preparing the materials, the water-cutting process can be carried out in six main steps:
First, select the right materials. Dark-colored containers such as glass jars work best. Use 10-6 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) solution, foam boards that are 2–3 cm thick, clean pebbles, and sterilized loose soil to ensure a healthy growing environment.
Second, prepare the cuttings. It's best to take cuttings the day before planting. Use a sharp knife to make a small cut at the base of the branch—avoid using scissors, as this can damage the plant. Choose semi-wooded and strong branches from the current year, about 6–8 cm long, with one or two leaves left intact to support photosynthesis.
Third, choose the right time for cutting. Water-cutting can be done throughout the year, but it's most successful during summer. In Shandong, the best time is mid to late July, when new branches are mature and ideal for propagation.
Fourth, perform the cutting operation. Use a sharp knife to make a slit in the middle of the lower end of the cutting. Immediately dip the cuttings into a 10-6 NAA solution for about 10 minutes. Place the cuttings into pre-made holes on the foam board, spacing them so that the blades don't overlap. Insert the cuttings into the holes so that the bottom part extends 3–4 cm into the water. Place the foam board on top of a container filled with water and set it in a sunny, well-ventilated area.
Fifth, manage the cuttings carefully. Change the water every 2–3 days. Spring or river water is ideal, but if using tap water, let it sit for 2 days first. When changing the water, remove any moss and disinfect the container with a 1/1000 potassium permanganate solution. In hot weather, mist around the container to maintain humidity. Rooting usually takes about 50 days at temperatures between 22°C and 28°C.
Lastly, transplant the rooted cuttings. Once the roots are well-developed (but not too long), gently break the foam board and remove the seedlings. Place half of the potting soil in the container, hold the seedling upright, and slowly add loose, moist soil around the roots without compacting it. Water the plants thoroughly, then keep them in a cool, shaded area for about two weeks. Afterward, they can be moved to normal care conditions, but avoid fertilizing immediately, as this may cause root rot.
