Long-term oral administration of hormones helps reduce the risk of lymphoma in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Release date: 2008-01-02

A recent study led by Dr. Eva Baecklund from Uppsala University in Sweden suggests that long-term oral hormone therapy may significantly lower the risk of lymphoma in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). According to the research, taking hormonal medications for more than two years was associated with a reduced likelihood of developing lymphoma. Importantly, this benefit did not depend on when the hormone treatment started during the course of the disease, but rather on the duration of the therapy itself.

The study involved 756 RA patients, including 378 who had or had not developed RA-associated lymphoma. Researchers analyzed various factors such as the type of oral hormones used, the length of treatment, the specific type of lymphoma, and how RA progressed during hormone therapy. They found no significant link between the duration of RA or the timing of hormone initiation and the development of lymphoma.

Patients who received hormone treatment for two years or longer showed a notable reduction in lymphoma risk, with a relative risk of 0.4 (95% CI: 0.2–0.7). The most significant protective effect was observed against large B-cell lymphoma, with a relative risk of 0.7 (95% CI: 0.4–1.0). These findings highlight the potential role of prolonged hormonal therapy in managing lymphoma risk among RA patients.

This research, reported by Midi Medical Network, adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the long-term benefits of certain treatments in autoimmune conditions, while also emphasizing the importance of monitoring and understanding the risks associated with prolonged medication use.
