Four Measures to Resolve Feeding Sow for Feeding

There are roughly four main reasons why sows may not nurse their piglets effectively. This can lead to issues such as competition for teats, "reverse psychology" among the piglets, inflammation of the udder, insufficient milk production, and stress or irritability in both sows and piglets. To address these problems, the following solutions can be applied: 1. **Establish a Fixed Nursing Position** After birth, it's important to guide the piglets to the right teats. Place weaker piglets in front of the sow while the stronger ones are positioned on the sides. Allow them to find the teats on their own, and monitor closely to ensure they’re all nursing properly. Stay with the sow for 2–3 days to help them get used to the routine. This will help create order and reduce fighting over teats. 2. **Treat Udder Inflammation Promptly** If the sow screams or becomes aggressive after the piglets try to nurse, it could be a sign of mastitis or injury. In such cases, treat the sow immediately. Also, trim the sharp canine teeth of the piglets using scissors to prevent them from biting the udder or damaging the teats. 3. **Support Milk Production with Proper Feeding** First-time sows often produce less milk and may press their udders against their bodies, making it hard for piglets to nurse. To stimulate milk production, you can feed them specific herbal mixtures: - Mix 100–200 grams of tea oil with boiled soy milk for 2–3 days. - Combine 100 grams each of ginger, Chen Ai, tangerine peel, fresh bamboo shoots, and 200 grams of bamboo leaves, along with 150 grams of malt, and feed this as a porridge. - Boil 250 grams of fresh loach with 30 grams of Digupi and a little salt, then give the soup 2–3 times daily. 4. **Artificially Encourage Bonding** First-time sows may lack experience and become stressed, causing the piglets to refuse to nurse. To help them bond, gently scratch the sow’s belly to encourage the piglets to nurse. Regularly massage the udder so the piglets become comfortable with it. Keep the sow calm and watch over the process, ensuring the piglets don’t fight over the teats. Combining this with a fixed nursing position can greatly improve success.
