Qufu, commonly known as the earthworm, is also referred to as Dilong in traditional Chinese medicine and holds significant economic value. These creatures have a wide range of feeding habits, capable of consuming various organic pollutants, making them an effective tool for treating organic waste and purifying the environment. With a high reproduction rate and rich protein content, earthworms can serve as a sustainable solution for animal protein, especially in livestock feed. Additionally, they possess considerable medicinal value, offering benefits such as fever reduction, muscle relaxation, asthma relief, blood pressure regulation, diuretic effects, and promoting circulation along meridians.
Raising earthworms is not only beneficial for the environment but also a profitable venture. Here are some practical tips for raising them:
Any non-toxic plant-based organic material can be used as feed. To prepare it, you can use a goldfish starter to ferment the materials. Crop straw or coarse organic waste should be chopped, while garbage needs to be sorted, sieved, and cleaned to remove metals, glass, plastics, stones, and slag before being crushed. Livestock manure and wood chips can be processed directly without fermentation. The treated organic matter should be mixed thoroughly. A combination of manure and grass, with 60% manure and 40% forage, is ideal. Then, add about 1-2% of the goldfish starter, mix well with water, and maintain a moisture level between 50% and 60%, ensuring that water begins to drip from the bottom of the pile.
Pile the mixture into a trapezoidal or conical shape, then cover the outside with pond mud or plastic film to keep it moist. After 4–5 days, the internal temperature should rise to 50°C–60°C. When the temperature starts to drop, turn the pile for secondary fermentation. Move the top layer to the bottom and the outer layers to the center, ensuring even fermentation. The final product should be odorless, not sour, soft to the touch, and brown in color. Once ready, spread it out and check the pH level before use. The ideal pH range is between 6.5 and 8.0. If necessary, add lime to adjust acidity, and rinse with water to remove excess salt and harmful substances.
Before introducing the feed to your animals, start with a small amount and monitor for any adverse reactions. If none occur, it’s safe to proceed. Raising earthworms is a smart and eco-friendly way to manage waste while producing valuable resources.
