days of fall:: 26

It's funny how moments like these seem to sneak up on you until they're here, and suddenly, everything feels so real. The day before Halloween, I found myself standing in front of the mirror, helping Baby Blue into her costume. It was a perfect fit, just as I'd hoped. Her little bag, painted with her name in bold letters, sat by the door, ready for action. The weather couldn't have been better—crisp but not too cold—and we were set to go Trick or Treating. For both Baby Blue and me, this was our first time doing it, and I think we were both a little nervous and excited. We met up with some friends, and as we started walking through the neighborhood, the excitement grew. Baby Blue was thrilled to have one of her cousins tagging along. She absolutely adores spending time with her, and seeing them together always brings a smile to my face. It was such a laid-back evening, nothing too chaotic, just the right pace for us. That’s exactly how I like it. But of course, as with any good adventure, there had to be a little mishap. Halfway through, one of the clowns tripped and broke her shoe. Poor thing! Baby Blue didn’t seem too phased though; she’s got quite the adventurous spirit. As we continued, the air started to feel a bit smoky, signaling we were nearing the more elaborate displays. There was this one house that stood out—complete with a cemetery, zombies shambling around, and even a guy wielding a chainsaw chasing after the undead. It was certainly something to see, especially in the dark with all their eerie strobe lights and moving props. Some of the adults, sans kids, went back later to check it out again, and let me tell you, it was a whole different experience in the shadows. Every now and then, a big, scary werewolf would pass by, and Baby Blue would immediately shout, "It's just a costume, like mine!" before running off giggling. By the end of the night, she was practically a pro at collecting candy, making her way confidently up to each house. Those little legs eventually got tired, and by the time the sun had fully set, she was ready to call it a night. Back at home, we gathered around for the afterparty. Baby Blue was thrilled to hang out with my brother and Crystal’s husband, Uncle Jeremy. They had a blast playing games and laughing together. And then came the pièce de résistance—caramel apples. Briony, who earlier had been the clown, eagerly grabbed a green apple to dip. Some of us were generous enough to share, but I have to admit, I kept mine all to myself. By the time Baby Blue started looking like a mini-candy zombie herself, we knew it was time to wrap things up. The sugar rush hit hard, and she crashed early, fast asleep until late the next morning. Hoping your own evening was filled with chocolate and fun!
