Woodland Finishing
1. Site Preparation Method: The area is cleared of undergrowth, and all stones, tree ridges, and bamboo ridges are completely removed to ensure a clean and suitable planting site.
2. Depth of Site Preparation: The soil should be tilled to a depth of 30 cm to promote good root development and drainage.
3. Hole Digging: Between 200 and 1650 holes are dug per hectare, with each hole measuring 50 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 40 cm in depth. This ensures proper spacing and adequate room for the roots to grow.
4. Trenching: A ditch is dug with a width of 25 cm and a depth of 30 cm, and each trench is approximately 6 to 8 meters long. These trenches help with water management and improve soil aeration.
Mother Bamboo Selection
1. Quality of Mother Bamboo: Choose strong, healthy bamboo with lush foliage and no signs of pests or diseases.
2. Age of Mother Bamboo: The ideal age is between 1 and 2 years old, as this ensures the plant is mature enough to establish itself quickly.
3. Size of Mother Bamboo: The diameter should be between 2 cm and 4 cm, which is considered optimal for transplanting.
Bamboo Excavation
1. Root Whipping: The rhizome (whip) should be cut to a length of 10–15 cm, and the root ball should be around 20–30 cm. Be careful not to damage the buds or nodes while digging, and ensure that at least 5 strong buds remain. Blackened rhizomes are not suitable for use as mother bamboo.
2. Soil Retention: Each plant should be carefully excavated with more than 10 kg of soil attached to the root system to reduce transplant shock.
3. Branch Retention: Leave 4 to 7 branches on the plant. The tips should be cut cleanly without causing cracks. Thick foliage can be lightly pruned to balance the plant’s structure.
Afforestation Methods
1. Planting Technique: Place the root whip into the prepared hole and cover it with soil up to a depth of 20–25 cm. Ensure the soil is compacted firmly but not overly compressed, and water the plant thoroughly after planting. Use stakes or supports if necessary to keep the plant upright.
2. Planting Time: The best time to plant is just before or after the plum season, which typically falls between early May and early June. Alternatively, planting can also be done in autumn (October–November) or winter (December–February), depending on local climate conditions.
3. Planting Density: The recommended density is 1200 to 1650 plants per hectare, ensuring sufficient space for growth and minimizing competition for resources.
This comprehensive approach to woodland finishing and bamboo planting ensures a successful establishment of the new plantation, promoting healthy growth and long-term sustainability.
