Breeding technique for meat pigeons

Pigeons are considered late-brooding birds, meaning their young are born in a very underdeveloped state. At birth, they have weak bodies, closed eyes, and only a few downy feathers. Their thermoregulation is poor, making them highly sensitive to environmental changes. They have low immunity, limited mobility, and struggle to survive on their own. These newborns cannot walk and rely entirely on their parents for feeding and care. However, in commercial breeding, it's common for parent pigeons to be unable to properly care for all their offspring. This requires close attention and careful management by the caretakers to ensure the young grow normally. To improve breeding efficiency, if two eggs hatch but only one or two squabs survive, it’s advisable to pair eggs of the same hatching date and squabs of similar age. This allows parent pigeons to focus on raising one or two chicks at a time, which improves their ability to provide adequate care. During this period, the parent pigeons must feed their young regularly, and their nutritional needs increase significantly. Around three to four days after hatching, the squabs' eyes begin to open, their body feathers start to grow, and they become more active. Their appetite increases, and their digestive system begins to function better. As a result, the parent pigeons need to consume more food to produce enough nutrients for their young. For example, breeding pigeons may require about twice as much protein-rich feed, such as legumes, compared to non-breeding ones. At the same time, the squabs' eating and defecating habits become more frequent, leading to quicker soiling of the nest. It’s important to keep the nesting area clean by using and replacing bedding materials frequently to prevent disease. Additionally, because their digestive systems are still developing, some squabs may not adapt well to the food provided, leading to issues like indigestion or enteritis. In such cases, adding a small amount of yeast tablets to their diet can help support digestion and promote better health.
