The other day during my Barre class, something interesting happened. As we stretched at the end of the session, I found myself feeling both relaxed and slightly wobbly—a mixture of post-workout relief and limberness. It struck me once again how important it is to stretch regularly, even on days when I don’t exercise. Immediately, I realized I had no clue about the best way to stretch! Sure, there are countless methods out there, but I wanted to know the absolute best approach. And I figured, maybe you’re curious too? Well, good news came my way. My Barre instructor, Jessica Haley, kindly agreed to share some insights. With a degree in Kinesiology, certifications as an AFAA group fitness instructor, and both a 200-level CYT and RYT, Jessica is highly knowledgeable. I initially thought she’d give me a list of five stretches to do daily, but instead, I ended up learning so much more! Jessica drew me this fantastic little diagram to guide my stretching routine. There isn’t a single magical set of stretches to follow every day, but there’s a simple formula to keep your body balanced and protect your spine from injury. Here’s how it works: Start in the middle with a Forward Bend, then move to a Back Band, followed by another Forward Bend, a Twist, another Forward Bend, a Lateral Bend, and finally end with a Forward Bend. Your stretches don’t have to be exactly the same every day—just stick to the basic structure, and it’ll work wonders. There are tons of variations within each category, so you can mix and match based on what feels right. You can also switch up your position—kneeling one day, sitting the next, lying on your back another, and standing the following. Jessica also demonstrated how this plan looks in action.
