Two glasses of wine for women daily effective bone protection

Recent studies have found that moderate drinking after menopause can help maintain bone strength. In contrast, non-drinking alcohol will increase the risk of osteoporosis in middle-aged and elderly women.

Experts from the International Alcoholic Beverage Research and Technology Forum analyzed a study completed by researchers at the University of Oregon. The study involved 40 healthy menopausal women with an average age of 56 years. The study found that women who took 19 grams of alcohol (approximately two small glasses of wine) daily could significantly reduce bone loss, improve old and new bone balance, and better maintain bone strength. When the researchers asked these women to stop drinking, their old and new bones alternated and bone loss worsened. But just on the day after they started drinking again, their bone strength recovered. This result shows that moderate drinking has protective effects on female bones comparable to bisphosphonates.

Professors Jonathan Powell and Levine Gago Dawson of the Medical Research Group of the Medical Research Council of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom stated that the latest research has fully proved that moderate drinking has a protective effect on bones.

Scientists said that a study published last year at the International Alcohol Beverage Research and Technology Forum stated that men and postmenopausal women moderate drinking (especially beer and wine) can help improve bone strength. A recent Finnish study also showed that women who drink at least 3 times a week have a significantly higher bone density than women who do not drink alcohol.

Sara Leland, an expert on the National Osteoporosis Association in the United Kingdom, warned that this new study does not encourage women to drink too much to protect their bones. She said that moderate drinking is good for bone health, while excessive intake of alcohol increases the risk of falls and fractures for middle-aged and older women.
