Interview with Dr. Wang Xiaoqing, Secretary General of the Medical Instrument Branch of the China Instrument and Control Association

In recent years, China's medical device market has maintained a high growth trend. The introduction of China's new medical reform program has also triggered people's attention to the market. Recently, the reporter interviewed the director of Beijing Taijie Magnetoelectric Research Institute, the Secretary of the Medical Instrument Branch of China Instrument and Control Society, and the member of the Expert Committee of China Medical Device Industry Association Wang Xiaoqing on the changes of medical model and the impact of medical system reform on the medical device market. Doctor.

Industry development should adapt to the transformation of medical model

Reporter: As an expert in the medical device industry, how do you view the development trend of the medical device market in recent years? How will the recent announcement of China's new medical reform program affect the medical device industry?

Wang Xiaoqing: In recent years, the development of the medical device industry has been quite fast, both internationally and domestically. On the whole, the competitiveness of domestic low-end medical device products is gradually strengthening, but the gap between high-end products and foreign countries is increasing. The essential differences in research and development models at home and abroad are the main reasons for this situation. In foreign countries, the development of medical devices aims at medical needs, emphasizing the integration of medicine and technology. But at home, we are basically technology-led, which has caused China to catch up quickly on low-end products, but the power of original innovation is not enough. But I think this is a necessary stage in the development of China's medical device industry. In the future, when our foundation is strengthened, original innovation will become more and more urgent. We will have more energy to focus on the development of high-end equipment.

Talking about the adjustment of China's medical policy, in my opinion, this is a major change in medical demand. As the new medical reform program emphasizes the medical concept of serving the grassroots, this will guide the focus of the medical device industry down. In the next three years, the state's investment in the medical device industry will reach hundreds of billions of yuan, which will benefit the development of the domestic medical device industry. However, the speed of development of the domestic industry depends on several other factors, such as the introduction of relevant national standards and the requirements of the state for network construction.

Reporter: You mentioned the shift in the focus of the medical device industry. How much impact will this have on the medical device market?

Wang Xiaoqing: The impact will be very large. At present, China's medical policy is facing a huge adjustment. In my opinion, this is also a re-adjustment of the medical concept.

In the future, the development of medical care will meet the public's medical needs as the fundamental goal. Therefore, medical device manufacturers should adapt to the changes in medical needs, that is, from the original focus on a few people, large hospitals, advanced equipment to the medical system that cares about the hierarchical medical model and the health of ordinary people.

Reporter: The new medical reform plan mentioned that in the future, China should establish and improve a sound community medical network. Compared with large general hospitals, what do you think are the specialities of community medical institutions? What new requirements are these specificities for the medical device industry?

Wang Xiaoqing: Community medical institutions have a special status under the new medical system in China. First of all, in the future, China will establish a hierarchical medical system to avoid the huge waste caused by medical resources due to unclear levels. In the future adjustment of the medical system, community medical treatment will be the first level in the hierarchical medical treatment, and it is a basic link.

Second, community medical institutions will also play a fundamental role in the transition of China's medical model. The current medical treatment in China mainly refers to diagnosis and treatment. But in the future, medical care must be developed in a broader field, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and health care. Because community medical services can enter people's families, interfere with people's lifestyles, make reasonable arrangements for people's health care, and monitor the rehabilitation of patients, community health care will play a fundamental role in the transformation of medical models.

In this situation, the medical device industry should pay attention to the following trends:

The first is the trend of low cost. Basic medical care is a basic test for medically accepted indicators. It is not a sophisticated diagnosis. Therefore, basic medical care requires low-cost equipment. The second is ease of use. For medical personnel in basic medical institutions, medical device companies need to provide them with easy-to-use equipment to facilitate their work. The third is the trend of networking, information and digitalization. In the future, China's medical system must be a networked system. Therefore, medical devices should also adapt to the development needs of networked medical systems and follow relevant standards to avoid the formation of information islands.

In addition, future medical devices will also be developed in the direction of interfering with people's lifestyles, which will provide us with many business opportunities.

Reporter: According to what you know now, do you estimate when China will establish a hierarchical medical system? What kind of medical equipment changes will be generated by this medical system?

Wang Xiaoqing: It is estimated from the current situation that perhaps five years or so, China will establish a hierarchical medical system. In the next five years, mature community medical models may be born in large and medium-sized cities in China, and their demand for medical equipment is mainly concentrated on testing equipment. In the next 10 to 20 years, as China's aging is deepening, it is expected that the market will have more demand for medical devices that improve people's quality of life. For example, the demand for home robots will increase.
