Progress in research on sciatica

Release date: 2007-10-19

Advances in research on sciatica Neuronal pain in the sciatic nerve distribution area caused by one or more lumbar disc herniations is a common disease. The lifetime incidence of the disease is estimated to be between 13% and 40%. Fortunately, most patients can relieve themselves with simple analgesic treatments and physiotherapy. However, the disease may develop chronically and is difficult to treat, thus having a serious impact on the social economy. Stafford MA and colleagues at Ulster Hospital in Belfast, Ireland, recently reviewed the history, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and natural history of sciatica. They searched Medline for literature on sciatica published between 1966 and 2006, and also conducted manual searches in related journals. Researchers have found that epidemiological factors affecting the incidence of sciatica include increased height, age, genetic predisposition, walking, jogging (such as a history of sciatica), and specific physical work occupations, including driving. They also discussed the effects of lumbar and sacral nucleus nucleus detachment and cytokine-mediated inflammatory responses. Abnormal immune responses and mechanical factors may also mediate pain. Epidural steroid injections can be used for the treatment of the disease, and the researchers also pointed out the potential risks of this operation and future research directions. ——Midi Medical Network
