EMA recommends approval of GSK vaccine

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the approval of the GlaxoSmithKline meningococcal conjugate vaccine for meningococcal disease in adults and children older than 1 year. The vaccine targets Neisseria meningitidis A, C, W-135, and Y populations. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) stated: "Given the good balance of risk for Neisseria, it is recommended to approve its sales permit."

Thomas Breuer, senior vice president and head of global vaccine development at GlaxoSmithKline, said that GlaxoSmithKline has more than 20 years of experience in developing meningococcal vaccines. This positive opinion represents a milestone in our development project and we look forward to receiving the final decision from EMA in the coming months.
