Bee Technology
1. Bee Release Timing: Start by releasing three batches of bees. The first release should occur when the corn borer pupae rate reaches 13-15%. After 10 days, release the second batch. Then, wait 5 days before releasing the third batch.
2. Number of Bees Released: A total of 15,000 bees per acre should be released. For each release, 0.5 million bees per mu (approximately 667 square meters) are used. This means 0.5 million bees per release for all three rounds.
3. Placement Points: Two placement points per mu, with each point covering about 334 square meters.
4. Method of Bee Release:
(1) Preparing the Bee Card: Based on the number of bees needed, tear the large bee card into smaller pieces. Each parasitic egg should contain approximately 80-100 bees, and two such pieces are placed per acre.
(2) Setting Bee Points: Place two bee cards per acre. Each card is placed on one ridge. The spacing between ridges should be 67 cm. Begin from the upper end of the field, count the ridges, and place the first bee on the 9th ridge. The placement starts from the top of the ridge, and the first bee is placed 14 meters from the edge. From there, each subsequent bee is placed 28 meters apart. This pattern continues until the end of the field. If the field has fewer than 9 ridges, only one placement point is made. If more than 9 but less than 18 ridges are present, adjust the number of placements accordingly.
(3) Attaching the Bee Card to Corn: After selecting a healthy corn plant, take a middle leaf and split it along the main vein. Fold half of the leaf over the bee card, roll it gently into a tube, ensuring the parasitic eggs face downward. Secure it with a piece of cloth or string.
Precautions:
(1) Once the farmer receives the bee card, it must be released on the same day. In case of light rain, release is still possible. In heavy rain, store the cards in a cool, ventilated area, away from pesticides.
(2) Only tear the bee card by hand—do not use scissors. Any eggs that fall during tearing should be collected and glued onto white paper.
(3) When hanging the card, avoid rolling it too tightly, as this could harm the bees. Do not place the card inside the corn leaves or directly on the surface, as this may reduce effectiveness.
(4) After hanging the card in the field, the bees will gradually emerge after 2–3 days. You can see small holes on the egg shell, indicating successful emergence.
(5) Avoid using pins or toothpicks, as they can damage the corn or cause accidents during harvest.
(6) When releasing the bees, consider wind direction and speed. If the wind is strong, increase the number of placement points or the release volume in the upwind area, and reduce it downwind.
(7) No pesticide should be applied within 4 days before the release, and no pesticide should be used for 20 days after the release in the corn field where the bees were placed.
This method ensures effective biological control of pests while maintaining crop health and sustainability.
