Autumn cauliflower seedlings in summer

In the south-central region of Hebei Province, July marks the critical time for growing seedlings of autumn cauliflower. However, this summer has brought challenging weather conditions—high temperatures, intense sunlight, drought, and minimal rainfall—that have made it harder for cauliflower to thrive. To help farmers overcome these challenges, here are some essential technical tips for cultivating autumn cauliflower. First, preparing the seedbed is crucial. Choose a shaded area for the seedbed and consider setting up a shade net above it to protect against excessive heat and rain. Avoid using soil from areas where cruciferous crops were grown in the past three years. Prepare nutrient soil by mixing well-decomposed farmyard manure, peat, and compound fertilizer in the right proportions. After thoroughly mixing, sieve out any stones or debris and spread the soil evenly in the seedbed with a thickness of about 5 cm. To disinfect the bed, spray 3000 ml of formalin solution per square meter, then cover the bed with plastic film for three days before removing it. Second, selecting the right variety is key. Opt for heat-resistant, disease-resistant, high-yield, and high-quality varieties such as Snow Mountain, Xuebao, and Sai Xue. These varieties are better suited for the harsh summer conditions and will lead to better results in the fall. Third, proper sowing techniques should be followed. For each acre, prepare a seedbed area of 5 to 6 square meters. Sow approximately 5 grams of seeds per square meter, totaling 25 to 30 grams per acre. Water the seedbed thoroughly before sowing. Once the water is absorbed, evenly distribute the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of fine soil (0.5–0.8 cm), and place a layer of grass or mulch to keep the area cool and moist. Fourth, effective seedling management is essential. During the hot summer months, seedlings grow quickly, and they typically reach transplanting stage after 25 days with 4–5 true leaves. For early-maturing varieties, it's important to transplant them on time to avoid seedling aging, which can result in small heads and lower yields. Transplant the seedlings when they have two true leaves. The transplanting area should be 50–80 square meters. You can either transfer them into sub-beds or directly into nutrient pots. In summer, seedlings usually don’t require additional fertilization, but frequent watering is necessary due to rapid evaporation. Water them in the morning and evening based on their growth to ensure they remain healthy and strong.
