In the south-central region of Hebei Province, July marks the ideal time for cultivating autumn cauliflower seedlings. However, this summer has brought challenges with high temperatures, strong sunlight, drought, and minimal rainfall, which can hinder the healthy growth of cauliflower. To help farmers overcome these difficulties, here are some essential technical tips for growing autumn cauliflower.
First, preparing the seedbed is crucial. Choose a shaded area for your seedbed, and consider using a shade net to protect against excessive heat and rain. Avoid areas where cruciferous vegetables have been grown in the past three years to reduce disease risk. Prepare a nutrient-rich soil mix by combining decomposed farmyard manure, peat, and compound fertilizer in the right proportions. After mixing thoroughly, sieve out any large particles like stones or debris. Spread the prepared soil evenly in the seedbed, about 5 cm thick. To disinfect the soil, apply formalin at a rate of 30–50 liters per square meter, diluted in 3,000 ml of water, and cover the bed with plastic film for three days before removing it.
Second, selecting the right variety is key. Opt for heat-resistant, disease-resistant, high-yield, and high-quality varieties such as Snow Mountain, Xuebao, and Sai Xue. These varieties are better suited to withstand the summer heat and produce good yields.
Third, proper sowing techniques are important. For each acre, prepare a seedbed of 5–6 square meters. Sow 5 grams of seeds per square meter, totaling 25–30 grams per acre. Water the seedbed thoroughly before sowing. Once the soil is moist, spread the seeds evenly and cover them with a thin layer of fine soil, about 0.5–0.8 cm thick. Use mulch or straw to keep the soil cool and moist.
Fourth, managing the seedlings effectively is essential. During the hot summer months, seedlings grow quickly, and they typically reach transplanting stage in 25 days with 4–5 true leaves. Early-maturing varieties should be transplanted promptly to avoid seedling aging, which can lead to smaller heads and lower yields. When the seedlings have two true leaves, they should be transplanted into a new bed measuring 50–80 square meters. You can either transplant them into sub-beds or directly into nutrient pots. Avoid applying additional fertilizers during this period, as the summer heat causes rapid evaporation and can lead to dryness. Water the seedlings in the morning and evening based on their needs to ensure they remain healthy and well-hydrated.
