Hong Kong's "Chinese Medicine Ordinance" entered into force on December 3rd more than 5,000 Chinese patent medicines sold in Hong Kong

According to data from the SAR Government's Department of Health, as of October, Hong Kong's industry filed a total of 16,700 applications for registration, including 14,000 applications for transitional registration. According to the statistics, there are currently 9,150 cases of transitional registration and 2,130 cases of formal registration. Meanwhile, 5,300 applications have not been registered because they failed to provide basic safety test reports on heavy metals, toxic elements, pesticide residues and micro-organisms.

A related person from the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong stated that the registration of Chinese patent medicines has been in progress for many years. The industry has plenty of time to make preparations according to legal requirements. Most products have already submitted applications for registration. If they have not yet applied, it is believed that the product test results have been unqualified or have Small producers "automatically abstained."

Dr Chow reminded that all unregistered proprietary Chinese medicines will not be allowed to be sold in Hong Kong after the commencement of the Ordinance. If any sale is found, the Department of Health will follow up with the source. Once verified, the retailer will also be liable for criminal acts.
