Zeeland
Zeeland, also known as Herba Lyeopi, is commonly referred to in English as Shiny Bugleweed Herb. It is also called Guam seedlings, bamboo shoots, earthworms, or snake king grass. This herb comes from the aerial parts of *Lycopus lucidus* Turcz. var. *hirtus* Regel, a perennial herb that typically grows between 0.3 and 1.2 meters tall.
The plant has an underground stem that spreads horizontally, with the tip often forming a spindle-shaped, fleshy tuber. The stems are square in shape, usually purple-red, and covered densely with white hairs along the ridges and nodes. The leaves are opposite, short-stalked or stalked, and shaped like lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate. They range from 2.5 to 12 cm in length and 0.4 to 4 cm in width, with a pointed tip and wedge-shaped base. The leaf margins are serrated and ciliate, while the underside is covered with dense bristles and glandular spots.
The inflorescence is an axillary umbel, containing 6 to 10 flowers per cluster. The sepals are lanceolate and hairy at the edges, while the calyx is bell-shaped with five teeth. The corolla is white, slightly two-lipped—its upper lip is suborbicular, and the lower lip is three-lobed, with glandular spots on the outside. The fertile stamen is located at the front, while the others are reduced to a rod-like structure.
The fruit is obovoid-shaped, triangular in cross-section. Flowering occurs from June to September, and the fruits mature from August to October. Zeeland thrives in marshy areas and along water edges, and it is commonly cultivated across the country.
It is harvested during summer and autumn when the stems and leaves are fully developed. After collection, the plant is cut and dried for use. Chemically, it contains flavonoids, saponins, phenols, sugars, and tannins. The taste is described as warm, bitter, and pungent.
In traditional medicine, Zeeland is used to promote blood circulation and reduce swelling. It is indicated for irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to hemorrhage, and edema. Its properties make it a valuable herb in herbal remedies, especially for women's health and fluid retention issues.
